Meet the Team

Professor Yael Mandelik

Primary Investigator

I am an ecologist and conservation biologist working on the interaction between biodiversity, ecosystem functions and land-use change. Much of the work in my lab focuses on insect pollinators and pollination, as a central ecosystem service, and explores questions related to pollination services to crops and wild plants, anthropogenic-induced changes in pollinator communities, pollinators health and pollinators conservation. We seek ways to restore communities of these beneficial insects in agricultural, afforested and natural landscapes and contribute to sustainable agriculture production and biodiversity conservation.

Sharon Asis

Sharon studies and develop agricultural interfaces to enhance both wild and domesticated pollinators activity in agriculture. To do so, she tests the effect of undisturbed spontaneous vegetation, sowen vegetation and nesting soil and nesting houses in agricultural settings.

Shahar Gofer

Shahar studies the relationships between climate change and wild pollinators, particularly bees. This research looks at the direct and indirect effects of heat stress and droughts on several aspects, including survival, behavior and plant-pollinator relations. By combining field work, experimental work and modeling, she plans to unravel the complex interactions within these ecosystems.

 Yehonatan Halevi

Yehonatan studies pollination ecology in avocado, combining his interests in agriculture and ecology to benefit both crop production and natural pollinators. European honeybees, the primary managed pollinator globally, often fail to provide sufficient pollination services for avocado due to the crop’s low attractiveness to bees and its high pollination requirements. Yehonatan's research explores how diversifying avocado’s pollinators can enhance pollination services and improve productivity. This approach requires a deep understanding of the habitat needs of various wild pollinators and effective orchard management strategies. His study focuses on: Understanding the conditions in avocado orchards and their semi-natural surroundings. Examining pollinator communities in avocado orchards and how they are influenced by spatio-temporal dynamics within and around the orchard. Identifying key potential natural pollinators and comparing their pollination performance. Yehonatan began his research as part of the Amirim program during his bachelor’s degree and is now completing his master’s thesis.

Itsik Sadeh

Itsik studies the impacts of environmental and nutritional factors on bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) colony health and development. His research investigates how gamma irradiation of pollen affects its nutritional quality and influences the physiology and development of bumblebee micro-colonies. Additionally, he examines the viral infection thresholds of DWV and IAPV in pollen to identify concentrations that can lead to colony-level infections. His work contributes to improving pollinator management in agricultural ecosystems, enhancing the sustainability of bumblebee use in crop pollination, and informing practices for commercial pollinator rearing and ecological conservation.

Garet Clara Awuor

Garet is studying the distribution and pollination agents of swallow-wort (Cynanchum acutum L.) in date orchards in the Southern Arava. Aim: Garet's research focuses on understanding the distribution and pollination agents of Cynanchum acutum within date orchards in the Southern Arava. It also examines the biotic pollination biology of C. acutum and its impact on plant reproduction.

Tuti Ninio

Tuti studies the preferences of local pollinators, aiming to identify the ideal soil types for their nesting and encourage them to nest in agricultural plantations. Her research explores how deliberate interventions in soil structure and composition can support pollinator populations and enhance their presence in agricultural landscapes.
